Ok everyone, I have a Big Red Compressor that rolls a round the back of the GU, i bought the compressor only so as i could mount the thing in the Patrol but it is far too big for the spaces I have available. I have two batteries, a bypass filter in the engine bay and a heat exchange mounted to the inside of bash plate of the Bull bar. The only places to mount seem to be very low, mainly the radiator support, under the wheel arches and i think they are too low, even for a low water crossing guy like me without a snorkel !! I have found that i can fit it inside the standard steel, spare wheel carrier if i make a bracket and weld it in. Then its as least as high as the top or the radiator. I could run the wires through the door skin with my antenna wire and back to my fridge wiring.. Any one see any problems with that? Any other ideas are welcome as I have ran out of them..
P.S. I have very good spare wheel security now after losing my Factory mag and brand new BFG about 18 months age to a midnight thief.. Thanks in anticipation.. Michael

I fitted my compressor under the drivers seat on its side and put a strap over it. Its been there for 5 years now and gets a fair bit of use.

All the best

The only obvious problems with mounting it would be finding a place, and it running very hot (ventilation).

Put it in a box, that'll stop it rolling around and keep it portable!

Cheers

I had a cheaper unit mounted in a box but found it a pain to use, especially on sandy roads etc.. I bought the bare bones unit this time and i was determined to vehicle mount it to make it easier to use. Michael

We have our compressor (ARB) mounted onto the cargo barrier- down low behind the drivers seat. It also operates the lockers- but to plug in the inflator hose I just slide the seat forward !!

Not sure how you've got the back end (inside) your rig set-up, but I'm not a fan of compressors being on the outside of a vehicle (including under the bonnet).

I would recommend finding a place above the rear wheel arch (assuming you've removed the 3rd row of seats). There are threaded bolt holes (from where the 3rd row of seats used to be anchored) that you can use to secure the unit.

If you have a set of drawers, then you could mount the pump on top of that, right up near the cargo barrier (assuming you have a cargo barrier).

Alternatively, there is the footwell for the 3rd row of seats..... a spot that is often unable to be used for any other purpose.

Under the driver's (or passenger's) seat is another good place.

With virtually all these ideas (including your own idea of mounting inside the spare wheel bracket), you need to hard wire it ........ and I would be using a SEPARATE heavy cable (via a relay) directly to the battery......don't use an existing cable for fridge etc.

Cheers

Roachie

HI Raochie, I would prefer to keep it inside , i dont have a cargo barrier , i keep the third row in for the kids sport, and i dont have rear drawers due to my big fridge! The spots to mount it properly in a free air environment are very limited.. especially on the 2004 model.. Thanks for your input.. I will keep looking.. Michael

Hi Michael,
I've got a physically similar Thomas compressor, but not the Big Red. I've got mine mounted horizontally on the firewall on the passenger side. Easy short DC feed from the aux battery.

Gday Gerry, My Gu 4.2 is a 2004 model, it has the cruise control actuator and module mounted in that same spot as your compressor. In the middle of the firewall is the bracket for the intercooler.. I had a 1999 GU and there is a heap more room in the engine bay. I'm with Roachie on this one to a degree, I would prefer to mount the compressor inside the vehicle rather than the engine bay or outside but the more modern the vehicle, the less room there is. At the moment the choices seem to be small. Thanks for that!. Michael

Hi Michael,
there is room in the side rear panel above the wheel arch, behind the lining! You'd have to bring out the air connector to a suitable point. Not well-ventilated, either. Recall rhs has a flat area on top of the wheel arch.
